Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States that primarily provides coverage for people aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities and people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It was established in 1965 under Title XVIII of the Social Security Act and is administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
